The week started with inclement weather and by Wednesday the heavy rain was giving us all bad memories of 2012. However, buoyed by favourable weather reports we pressed on erecting marquees, fencing (which was kindly given by Bunzl Greenham in Leeds) and signage. The stage turned up early Wednesday morning courtesy of Bibby’s Distribution together with the toilet facilities which were very kindly provided by Caddick Construction Ltd.
On Thursday we were well ahead of schedule by the time that Murph and the lads from Newburn Power Rentals turned up for two full days in order to wire up the field for our electrical requirements. By Thursday afternoon Speedy Hire turned up with our water bowser, gas for the BBQ fryers and hog roast, arena fencing and walkie talkies and John Penny’s with their refrigerated wagon. On Thursday evening we took delivery of our beer to site including a free barrel kindly donated by Wharfebank Brewery in Otley.
On Friday, the day before the event, Northern Hire Ltd kindly provided free of charge the hire of tables and chairs for our champagne tent and various catering equipment.
Then, started Mark & Amy’s six hour shopping session buying supplies from Makro, Costco and all fresh meat from SLG Butchers in Leeds.
It goes without saying that without the support of companies such as this the Rawdon Fun Day would never happen.
Saturday morning started early at 5am with putting out the “No Waiting Cones” out on Layton Road and the relief around the committee looking at blue skies was immense. By 7.30am our first stalls and traders started arriving and by 9.30am when the first walk of smiles participants arrived the field was looking fairly full.
At 10.30am the walk of smiles departed and at 11.00am the gates opened to members of the public who just kept coming all day!!! This was without doubt our busiest Fun Day ever and we estimated that by 2.30pm over 3000 people had passed through the gate. It was so busy that we had to send out for more change, champagne and beer on two separate occasions!
The main arena displays again proved to be very popular and the side stalls and traders also proved to be a hit this year with various comments filtering back to us that there was far more to see and do. By the time the fun day finished we had crowned two new Rawdon Welly Wanging Champions – Craig Vine & Alice Carr!
Those who stayed behind were entertained on stage by Voxe, Vacant and Frontier bands that were all excellent. We then retired to the bar for an excellent acoustic set and there was not a beer to be had anywhere by 9.30pm – a sign of a successful day.
Many thanks for all your support.
